Beauty in my husband’s scruffy mustache

which frames a perfect smirk

For I know the kindness behind the smile

Beauty in my mother’s aching hands

which tousled her grandson’s hair

For I know the love behind the caress

 

There is beauty

Beauty in my son’s grimaced expression

which dances across his determined face

For I know the motivation behind the effort

 

There is beauty

Beauty in my granddaughter’s wobbly legs

which carry her toward her first steps

For I know the magic behind the transition

 

There is beauty

Beauty in my student’s hard-earned “B”

which decorates his first test

For I know the satisfaction behind the mark

 

There is beauty

Beauty in my good friend’s predicament

which disrupts a familiar life

For I know the rewards behind the struggle

 

Sometimes disguised in frustration

And accented by hardship

Beauty prevails in the face of
