The Hike

It was there, tucked away

by the side of the busy road

A small gap in the underbrush

Just a faint hint of a path

flanked by overgrown weeds

and towering trees

Joining hands

we pushed our way through

Curiosity spurring us forward

as we entered the quiet forest

Each step bringing us further away

from the noisy world behind

Shrouded in the cool, Spring air

and the speckled sunlight that danced through the leaves

our footsteps traced the ragged trail

through steep hills and rocky outcrops

as the meandering river far below

mirrored our course

Faded markers here and there

invited us to follow a new route

as we followed blindly

Delighting in each turn

that revealed new wonders

of this secret world – a perfect oasis

Only minutes from that busy road

and a few miles from the hustle and bustle

We were transported to a magical land

somehow existing in another space, another time

Reflecting the value of the here and now

that a walk in the woods can bring
