The Task I was assigned:
Complete one act of kindness (ie. donate something to the homeless or someone in need; help someone carry groceries; shovel a walk way for some one; volunteer somewhere; etc…) and write a post about the experience.
As part of a school activity, I took my students to work at our local soup kitchen. Here is my response to that.
In Service
Spent time looking through the window
at life lived on the other side
A few hours out of a busy life
serving the needs of others
Clients poured in, exchanging greetings
We poured beverages, exchanging glances
The window was crystal clear
We could easily occupy that empty chair
Demystifying the notion of “Us” and “Them”
That which we had in common was far greater
than that which made us different
We all face that blank canvas each day brings
Love, Hate, Joy, Sorrow
Universal truths no one escapes
Disappointment is known to all
Some simply fall harder than others
And so, I opened that window
to acknowledge the need to be aware
Thankful for each blessing, remembering
There but for the grace of God go I
