Grandma’s Song

Eh Cumpari, ci vo sunari

Chi si sona? Un friscalettu

E comu si sona you friscalettu?

You friscalette, tipiti tipiti tam

More magical than a grand castle,

her home was love

I found gold in that old formica table

and picked sweet cherries from the backyard tree

as I spilled purple Kool-Aid from a bubbled pitcher

And on the best days, she would sing

this silly little song, acting out the parts

as we all played along, joining in as we

recited a language we didn’t speak

We knew every word by heart

How was I to know that song she sang

would cradle me in times of joy and times

of sorrow, her loving spirit still reaching me

so long after she left us

She knew… each time she sang, she knew

We’ve taught this song to our children,

my sisters and I, passing down the memory as

we laughed and danced and created new memories

and a safe place to land, still feeling the warmth

of my grandmother’s arms

  1. I wish I had paid lots more attention to the local songs and games of my grandmother….now I am culturally lost and totally westernized….not being able to recall any of these. More familiar with baa baa black sheep and other ditties….a great regret.

  2. Hi,
I think it’s wonderful you share that you’ve been married more than once. I have also, but when I share it, people think I don’t respect marriage, so I’m not forthright about it.
I know Sally, Lis, Send Sunshine, and Jason Cushman. I met you on his site at his Meet and Greet. I would have come sooner, but I’ve been on a cruise ship paying for Internet minutes. You said you appreciated community, so I came over. I do also, so I have ten networking events each month including two Meet and Greets like Jason. Maybe you can check out my site if you need a blogging tip or two. That’s what I write about.

    • Nice to meet you. Thanks for the comments. I’m not nervous about sharing who I am. I’m a big believer in the idea that someone’s opinions of me are none of my business and I would never judge someone else’s choices. You never know what a person is going through. Anyway… I would love to follow your blog and participate in your events. Thanks for the invitation!
