I met a man who wasn’t there
standing in the rain
whispering my name
All the nameless gathered round
as his hard won wisdom kept them spellbound
Maybe I knew whitewashed dreams
are never what they seem
Maybe I knew the night it all began
it was more than I could stand
as he sang the words of a break-up song
dissecting the anatomy of each wish gone wrong
Crowds gathered as he climbed on a chair
spewing words to describe my pain
truth and lies washing down the storm drain
and the nameless made no sound
as he followed the story of my failures like a bloodhound
Maybe I knew whitewashed dreams
are never what they seem
Maybe I knew the night it all began
it was more than I could stand
as he sang the words of a break-up song
dissecting the anatomy of each wish gone wrong
And it’s all coming full circle now
and maybe I knew all along
the man who wasn’t there is finally breathless
cuz I’m singing his song
and building new dreams
washing you away, washing you away
Maybe I knew whitewashed dreams
are never what they seem
Maybe I knew the night it all began
it was more than I could stand
and so I sang the words of a break-up song
knowing without you, I am on my way
Sun is shining and here to stay
I’m stronger every day

Thanks! It was one of the writing prompts. As soon as I read it, I knew I’d do something with it.

Beautiful piece. I really like this one. Knowing it’s wrong but going for it anyways. Knowing the terrible truth of someone and finally using their hatred and lies against them to move on and grow — sing a break up song and be free. 🙂
