As a teacher in a Catholic school, I was required to attend a safety meeting last week. It was held in a church and two retired law enforcement personnel taught us what to do if there was an active shooter during mass. While an important discussion, I was struck by the contrast of the topic in a place that is supposed to be one of peace.
Panic buttons on the altar, just in case
In the sacristy, they are installing a landline
Necessary safety measures put into place
Look at the hands, watch for a sign

A new way of living, we’re told to embrace
Look at the hands, watch for a sign
in a place of worship, this holy space
A new way of living, we’re told to embrace
Will armed guards distribute communion and wine

The repetition was very effective and really drove it home. I honestly think the measures they are taking will make matters worse. Anytime we act from a place of fear it just leads to more violence. I wish you peace and safety

I know exactly how you feel. We are getting ready to do the “active shooter” training thing, too. Sometimes I feel as if this will scare folks away. Especially the older ones.

That was brought up at the meeting. It is a real concern. 😢
