Wastelands

No one felt it

almost imperceptible, that moment

when the stars shivered just past midnight

and pulled together and apart and together again

when old plows that once tethered a man to rich soil

disintegrated in overgrown fields, an undignified death

when lush forests filled with ancient trees

morphed into a wasteland of stumps like a broken-toothed scowl

when answers and questions and situations toggled

between right and wrong and right and wrong

right, wrong, right, wrong, wrong, wrong

that almost imperceptible moment

when everyone quit

Did you feel it?
